Shelby Miller's Spring Training

Cardinals top prospect pitcher, Shelby Miller is named their 5th rotation starter after having a solid win (4-3) on the mound against Minnesota on Monday. He gave up 1 run on 6 six hits and 2 walks in 4 1/3 innings. The 22 year old pitcher has had an impressive spring with a 3.94 ERA in 16 innings, walked 5 and struck out 13. He got his first view in the MLB last year after having a 1.32 ERA in 13 and 2/3 innings as September call-up before seeing action in the National League Championship Series against the San Francisco Giants. The young prospect says "I'm really excited, I'm still trying to talk it all in that I am the 5th starting pitcher behind some of the best pitchers in the league." He also states that it is hard to believe that he is playing with the Saint Louis is Cardinals because it is one of the most respected teams in the league.

Beltran's Injury

After having to deal with another major injury for the Cardinals they dont let it affect their game energy. With a fractured small right toe Beltran doesn't let it affect his game, he continues to play. The Cardinals season opener is one week away from Sunday and Beltran says he will play in that game and he will do anything to fix the injury. Beltran has not played in a Spring Trainging game since he was hit in the toe by a pitch on February 28th. When Beltran returned to Spring Training on Friday, he has done limited work. He played five innings in Minor League game Sunday and spent Monday morning taking swings in the batting cage. If Beltran palys in Tuesday's Grapefruit League game, it will take away the Cardinals chance to delay the disabled list to a maximum of 10 days. If so a player can't play in a spring game after March 21st.

Kyle Lohse Trade

The Stl Cardinals ace pitcher last year has officially been traded to the Milwakee Brewers today for 3 years and 33 million dollars. A 16 game winner and cardinals ERA (earned run average) leader after last year and he gets traded to the Cardinals division rival. On the bright side the Cardinals do benefit a little bit from this trade. They get a compensation pick that it positioned itself for by making Lohse the qualifying offer. They get a 28th first round pick and will add at least 1.65 million to the cardinals pool of draft money. Since the Brewers have signed Lohse they also loose a first round 17th pick to the Cardinals.

2011 World Series MVP, David Freese

David Freese's spring training has not been too successful so far. With injuries it is holding him back from having another outbreak season. Even though doctors are saying he could be ready for opening day according to his MRI's he might not be 100%. After his MRI last week the results were very encouraging after seeing no issue with any discs in Frees's back. The Cardinals are hoping for a healthy David Freese by April 1st and seeing no innflammation in his lower back. Freese was scratched from Sundays lineup after running and swinging and having an aggravated feeling in his lower back after morning workouts. Freese has had only 30 at-bats in Spring Training, but he says it is enough to be ready for the start of regular season if healthy.
